May Is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month!

Regular physical activity is good for everyone’s health, and people of all ages and body types can be physically active! Here are a few ways that physical activity can help in each age group-

Children and adolescents- physical activity can improve bone health, muscular development, heart health and self esteem

Adults- physical activity can reduce the onset of type II diabetes, heart disease, and some types of cancer.

Older Adults- physical activity can increase cognitive function, increase stability, decrease the incidents of falls.

Here are just a few ideas of how to promote an active lifestyle:

  • Families can make small changes together, like taking a walk after dinner time

  • Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of student learning

  • Find enjoyment and try something new to keep active: ride a bike, try a new hiking trail, yoga- or mindful breathing exercises, golf, paddle boarding, organized sports, throw a baseball around with kiddos...etc! So many ways to be active!

Custom Sports Guards- We highly recommend children, adolescents, and adults to wear a Sport Guard during activities that are more prone to dental injury.

Before going out on the field to play a contact sport, it is important to remember that teeth are also at risk of injury- and they do not grow back!

Even when helmets are part of the required equipment, a collision or accident can still result in a damaged or knocked out tooth.

As a family dentist, we know many patients with children participating in sports and offer custom sports mouth guards to protect growing smiles and give parents peace of mind.
