Treat Cavities and Minor Damage with Metal-free Fillings

Getting a dental cavity is never fun, but these dental problems are pretty common. To put this into perspective, about 90% of adults aged 20 and more have had at least one cavity! The good news is that treating a cavity is relatively easy, especially when it’s detected early. Piney Creek Family Dentistry uses composite (metal-free) fillings to address your cavities in just one appointment!

The cavity treatment procedure

If you have a cavity, you should prioritize treatment because ignoring it could cost you your tooth down the road. That tiny hole grows bigger as bacteria eat away your enamel. Soon, the infection reaches your pulp chamber, and if you don’t undergo root canal treatment, your tooth will finally die.

Why go through this, yet treating a cavity is quick and painless? Once we discover a cavity in your smile, we numb your gums to reduce discomfort during treatment. Next, we drill out the decayed part and fill it with composite resin in layers. Then, we harden the material using a curing light. Your dentist will test your bite and make the necessary adjustments to your filling until your bite feels natural. Finally, we will polish your filling to give it a natural appearance.

Just like that, you only need one appointment to treat your cavity and leave our office with a healthy smile.

Why composite fillings?

Years back, dentists used metal (amalgam) fillings to treat cavities. Silver-colored fillings work, but they don’t look beautiful, and their safety record isn’t the best. Metal fillings are composed of 50% mercury, which can find its way into your body. While there is insufficient evidence to prove the amount released is detrimental to your health, you can’t take chances with your health.

Dr. Tiffany Fritz uses composite fillings to treat dental cavities. White fillings are a blend of glass and acrylic (no metal) and can be tinted to resemble the shade of the surrounding tooth for a natural appearance.

Besides aesthetics, metal-free fillings are preferred because:

  • White fillings remain intact even when subjected to temperature changes
  • They are versatile for treating teeth at the back and front of the mouth
  • Composite fillings offer superior protection to the tooth
  • They are durable when well maintained
  • The composite filling procedure conserves much of your natural tooth’s structure
